Dr. Ted Allaire Barrios is an assistant professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation within the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. He also holds a secondary appointment within the Department of Counseling & Behavioral Health in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Science. Across settings, Dr. Barrios strives to partner with people with disabilities and chronic health conditions to collaboratively address barriers to functional independence and quality of life.
Dr. Barrios practices as a rehabilitation neuropsychologist at UPMC Mercy, where he specializes in the neuropsychological evaluation and management of adults living with neurobehavioral conditions, like traumatic brain injury, stroke, and myelomeningocele with hydrocephalus. His clinical interests span the rehabilitation continuum; he currently provides care to patients participating in both acute (inpatient) rehabilitation, as well as in his outpatient neuropsychology clinic at Mercy Community Care. Dr. Barrios is also the primary neuropsychologist in the UPMC Adult Spina Bifida Clinic at the Mercy Pavilion.
As a clinician-scientist, Dr. Barrios’ research interests focus broadly on identifying how best to measure (e.g., psychometrics) and intervene upon constructs of interest, including functional independence, quality of life, and executive functioning. In 2025, Dr. Barrios secured funding from the FISA Foundation to lead a study focused on the development, implementation, and evaluation of a health-behavior intervention program for adults with spina bifida.
In addition to his clinical and research responsibilities, Dr. Barrios serves as co-director of the APPCN-member Lifespan Rehabilitation Neuropsychology Fellowship at UPMC.
