Inpatient Services

The UPMC Rehabilitation Institute (RI) and PM&R work together to provide of high-quality rehabilitation medicine from admission to acute care through inpatient rehabilitation. At the inpatient rehab level, the PM&R physician leads a truly comprehensive treatment team to include other specialists: physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, recreation therapists, neuropsychologists, and discharge plan managers. Our physicians work with patients undergoing treatments for conditions like cancer, after organ transplant or amputation, or after prolonged hospitalization and illness, to increase strength thereby improving the body’s healing process. The UPMC RI at Mercy is the primary location for rehabilitation medicine and care for people with traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and other complex medical conditions. The specialty units cater to the unique medical needs after traumatic injuries and prepare patients for returning to the community with the abilities needed for life in their community. All of our inpatient units provide care for those with stroke, neurological diagnoses such as MS, Parkinson's, or Myasthenia Gravis, and complex conditions. Consult services at all our locations provide pre-rehabilitation for patients to ensure a smooth discharge to the next level of care, whether it is inpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing facilities, or home.
