Andrew McCoy, MD

Why did you choose UPMC residency program?
My initial introduction into the specialty of PM&R was through my experience with my younger brother, who was born with spina bifida, and his journey of perseverance to become a Paralympic gold medalist in the sport of sled hockey in Sochi, Russia in 2014. I have found that the rehabilitation he received throughout his childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood steered him toward the path of success. In medical school, I also found a passion for anatomy and neuroscience that the specialty of PM&R brings together in a harmonious manner that focuses on patient function and quality of life.

I chose UPMC for both its reputation and well-rounded exposure to PM&R and its subspecialties in variety of different clinical settings across the UPMC system. It also provides distinct specialty tracks in administrative leadership and research which I found unique.
